January 18, 2014: Salaries Hiked in Region 2

Tuguegarao City, Cagayan — Workers from the private sector in Cagayan Valley region will earn a bigger income this year following the implementation of minimum wage increase set by the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) through its Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Board (RTWP).
Lawyer Sixto Rodriguez Jr., the director of DOLE Region 2 and RTWP chairperson, disclosed that Wage Order RTWPB-II-16 prescribed the minimum wage hike per province in which P7 for private establishments employing not more than ten in the provinces of Batanes and Quirino; P6 in Nueva Vizcaya; P5 in Cagayan; and P3 in Isabela for sectors in the agriculture, non-agriculture, and in retail and services.
He said the wage increase in the three labor sectors in Cagayan Valley region was based on the result of the series of labor consultations and public hearings, and the existing socio-economic conditions of the region.
The wage order was passed on November of last year; published on December 21, 2013 and implemented last January 5.
He said that close monitoring on the wage hike implementation in the region is going on.
“We need to verify if the employers are really compliant to the wage orders we are issuing or if employees are afraid of filing complaint against their employers. For now, we presume that employers will follow the minimum wage for their employees,” he said.
However, he encouraged employees to file complaint to DOLE through the National Labor Relations Commission (NLRC) if their employers didn’t follow the new wage order increase.
