November 29, 2013: Firns Offer Yolanda Survivors Jobs

Cebu City, Cebu — Victims of super-typhoon “Yolanda” in Samar and Leyte provinces will be given priority in the job fair scheduled in Cebu City this Saturday, with a growing number of Cebu employers indicating they want to hire them.
Susan Ardosa, chief of the city’s Department of Manpower Placement and Development (DMDP), said more Cebu-based companies have expressed interest in participating in this Saturday’s job fair here primarily organized to help find jobs for the typhoon victims.
A similar job fair held last week saw 27 Cebu firms hiring typhoon victims on the spot. Other companies have also scheduled applicants for follow up.
Ardosa said the employers stressed that even if the applicants from the typhoon-ravaged areas will not be able to produce complete documents during their application, they will still be considered for jobs fitting their skills and past work experience.
Another job fair is scheduled on December 7, still with the same intent of helping displaced workers from Samar and Leyte provinces find employment in Cebu.
Meanwhile, officials of the Department of Social Welfare and Development and the city’s Department of Social Welfare Services (DSWS) are set to meet today to discuss rules and provisions for evacuees who want to stay in Cebu for good.
DSWS chief Ester Concha said there are at least 200 individuals from Leyte who have expressed desire to stay in Cebu for good instead of going back to their typhoon-ravaged province.
Concha said she will discuss with her DSWD counterpart the content of the seminar and briefing that will be given to the evacuees who want to remain in Cebu.
