October 17, 2013: Firms Go Beyond Hiring in Manila Bulletin Job Fair

There’s more to job recruitment in career expos.
Aside from filling up vacancies for various positions, companies that join job fairs use these events to gain mileage, determine the area’s local employment demographics, and even check on other players in the industry.
At the third and last leg of the 6th Manila Bulletin Job Fair held in SM City Sta. Rosa, Laguna, participating companies shared their experience in joining the publication’s career expo.
We were surprised with the turnout of applicants, said Cristina Bondoc, corporate HR head for Uratex. The manufacturing company is one of the first-time exhibitors that saw a number of applicants during the two-day event.
She said that even though they cannot accommodate all the applicants, they are considering them for future vacancies. The company has 20 job openings for their offices in Valenzuela, Alabang, Bulacan, and Cabuyao.
Hub For Future Applicants. BPO company Sykes may not have a site in Laguna but the company joined the job fair to beef up their recruitment profiling, as well.
“The nearest office we have is in Makati but we are also getting applicants for our database for our upcoming events,” said Sykes HR Sourcing Associate Elizabeth Patio. She said this is one way for the company to determine the demographics of areas where they conduct job recruitment.
With the theme, “Your First Day of Work Starts with Us,” the Laguna job fair offered employment in the BPO, retail, recruitment, hospitality, manufacturing, information technology (IT), and telecommunications from more than 30 participating companies.
Job fairs have greatly helped in creating effective employee match up.
Convergy’s Nuvali, for instance, was able to hire six applicants on the spot in the first day of the Laguna leg.
“We look for applicants who have call center experience but we get those who are willing to apply as well,” said Raymond Tejido, who part of Convergy’s Nuvali sourcing team.
Aside from beefing up their talent pool, companies are also able to gauge how other firms are doing during career expos.
“It’s also our way of looking at our competitors, at where they are at,” said Patio.
The 6th MB Job Fair hired 103 applicants in the Cebu leg last month while there were 453 jobseekers who found employment in the Manila leg last August.
More Opportunities Next Year. With the success of the three-part job fair, job seekers could expect better job opportunities next year.
“We’re going on with more of these job fairs so that we could serve our people and pursue MB’s mission to contribute in the country’s progress,” MB External Affairs Head Barbie Atienza said.
