May 1, 2013: 'Labor Day' in the Philippines

Labor Day (Araw ng Manggagawa) is a non-working holiday celebrated on May 1 of every year in the Philippines. Filipinos observe this year the celebration of the 111th Labor Day, with the theme, “Manggagawang Pilipino: Handa sa Hamon ng Makabagong Panahon.”
Labor Day is a special day of the year when public and private sector Filipino workers are paid homage and recognition for their contributions to Philippine growth and development. President Benigno S. Aquino III is scheduled to have a breakfast-dialogue with labor groups. The Department of Labor and Employment has lined up activities to mark the day, among them 75 job fairs nationwide, livelihood training, free legal consultation, discount caravans, free medical checkup, and symposiums.
His Eminence, Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio G. Cardinal Tagle, will hold a concelebrated Mass on May 1, 2013, at the Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene in Quiapo. An ecumenical gathering and solidarity lunch with the workers will be held at Plaza Miranda, Quiapo, Manila.
The January, 2013, Labor Force Survey showed that there were 37.94 million employed persons in January, 2013, for an employment rate of 92.9%, of which 54.1% were in the services sector. Among the regions, Cagayan Valley (96.7%) and Zamboanga Peninsula (96.6%) had the highest employment rates. The National Capital Region recorded 90.5%.
We congratulate the Department of Labor and Employment, headed by Secretary Rosalinda D. Baldoz, Undersecretary Danilo P. Cruz, Undersecretary for Labor Relations and Philippine Overseas Employment Administration Administrator Hans Leo J. Cacdac, Undersecretary Ciriaco A. Lagunzad III, and Overseas Workers Welfare Administration Administrator Carmelita S. Dimzon, other Officers and Personnel, on the occasion of the 111th celebration of Labor Day in the Philippines.
