March 1, 2013: Tourism Sector Generates High Employment

Manila, Philippines – A part from the manufacturing sector, the tourism sector is one of the areas being considered by the government to generate high employment. More tourists arriving in the country means more jobs for porters, drivers, and souvenir item vendors, and so on. The Department of Tourism (DOT) said it expects to create seven million new jobs in the tourism industry at the end of President Benigno S. Aquino III’s term.
The National Tourism Development Plan (NTDP), which was launched by the DOT on May 3, 2012, is a P265-billion program aimed at achieving 10 million international tourist arrivals and 35.5 million domestic travelers in 2016.
The government will work with the private sector through the public-private partnership (PPP) to realize the NTDP’s goals. Under PPP, investments will be poured to build new hotels, resorts, shopping malls, leisure and entertainment facilities, health and wellness as well as cruise and transport facilities.
The latest development was the country’s hosting of the 20th Travel Tour Expo led by the Philippine Travel Agencies Association on February 17, 2013. To achieve its vision of attracting more tourists to come to the Philippines, the DOT launched on January 5, 2012, its “It’s More Fun in the Philippines” tourism campaign.
We congratulate the government of the Republic of the Philippines headed by H.E. President Benigno S. Aquino III and the Department of Tourism headed by its Secretary Ramon R. Jimenez Jr., in promoting tourism as a major socio-economic activity to generate foreign currency and employment and to spread the benefits of tourism to both the private and public sector in the Republic of the Philippines.
