January 20, 2012: Local government’s special job fair benefit Cebu City’s displaced workers

Cebu City, Cebu – In its aim to facilitate hiring of displaced workers, especially workers displaced by the fire which gutted Gaisano Capital South in December last year, the city government’s Department of Manpower Development and Placement (DMDP) has been organizing special jobs fairs to help such employees.
Department of Head Fidel Magno said the department has conducted special jobs fairs with about 10 employers during the period January 11-16 this year.
Among the employers during the special jobs fair were Gaisano Metro, SM, Rustan’s, Dranix, and Golden Cowrie.
Magno revealed that close to 50 individuals have already been hired on the spot as of Wednesday last week.
He added that the department is also expected to conduct more local jobs fairs before the end of January.
Last year, Magno disclosed that the DMDP was able to hold 44 jobs fairs, one which was held overseas, and the more will be organized this year id the department’s budget allows. Of a total 13,319 registered applications, 2,647 workers were hired on the spot during various jobs fairs held in 2011.
Magno said holding a jobs fair is a costly affair. “A barangay event, for instance, costs P25,000 thereabouts to organize, while about P10,000 would need to be spent for a mega jobs fair,” he said.
