December 26, 2011: Gov’t, PRC seek upgrade of welfare of unemployed Filipino nurses

The number of unemployed nurses in the country may further rise next year. This was view expressed by more than 200,000 jobless and unemployed nurses nationwide.
“Although enrollment for nursing courses is going down, there are still many in the pipeline, considering that 68,000 graduates just took the licensure examination this month,” Marco Sto. Tomas of the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) Board of Nursing, said.
He said the PRC and other concerned government agencies are exerting all efforts to improve the lives of nurses, including the unemployed by pushing for the implementation of the so-called Hastening Options for Productivity and Employment (HOPE) for Filipino nurses.
“The program aims to promote entrepreneurship by putting up their own business for Filipinos nurses who are now having difficulty finding employment,” said Sto. Tomas.
Labor Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz, meantime, already ordered the PRC to coordinate with other concerned government agencies and look into the condition of unemployed Filipino nurses.
The Department of Labor and employment may come out with new rules to regulate the “hiring” of nurse volunteers in hospitals and other medical facilities nationwide.
The oversupply of licensed nurses in the country prompted many registered nurses to work for free or even pay hospitals so they could work and gain the necessary experience to qualify them for employment abroad.
